Extremity Pain Q & A

What is extremity pain?

Extremity pain includes any discomfort you feel in your arms, hands, legs, or feet, and the symptoms may vary depending on the underlying cause.

Symptoms of extremity pain may include:

  • Pain in the arms, legs, hands, foot, fingers, or toes
  • Tingling, burning, or numbness
  • Muscle weakness in the affected extremity
  • Loss of muscle mass – muscle wasting
  • Joint pain or stiffness
  • Sensitivity to touch

Your extremity pain may also start in one part of your body, such as your lower back or neck, and radiate into your limbs.

What causes extremity pain?

Extremity pain may develop after an injury, overuse, or an underlying medical condition.

Conditions that produce extremity pain may include:

Sciatica

Sciatica is a painful condition that develops from compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. The pain radiates along the path of the nerve, running from the lumbar spine through the hips and buttocks and into the legs on both sides of your body.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)

CRPS is a chronic pain condition that may affect your arms, hands, legs, or feet after an injury to the limb.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain, numbness, or tingling sensations in the hand and fingers from compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in your wrist.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome causes pain, burning, or tingling in the feet from compression of the posterior tibial nerve as it passes through the tarsal tunnel in the ankle.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis is a type of joint pain that usually develops from overuse. As a result, you may develop tendonitis in the knee, elbow, shoulder, or ankle.
